From Obama's fundraising letter yesterday:

_____________________________

Barack has already won more votes, more delegates, and more than twice as many states as Senator Clinton, whose path to the nomination has grown extremely narrow. But these loans show that her campaign will continue to contest the remaining primaries vigorously.

We need to show that the voices of more than 1.5 million ordinary people donating whatever they can afford are more powerful than one person giving more than $11 million to their own campaign.

>>I don't think it sends the right message to pay off Clinton's debt<<

It's an interesting issue.
I agree that it would be egregious to use small donors' cash to repay the Clinton loans. You could make an argument for settling everything except the loans, as a cessation of hostilities might save a similar amount cash the campaign would otherwise have to spend.

Here's an discussion of possible negotiations between the two camps (much of which I disagree with...) -

Bill Clinton made over $50 Million in speaking fees in the last several years...

You've just given me an idea. The Obama campaign could employ Bill and Hillary in a sort of work-study program. They each get $1/minute toward retiring her campaign debt as long as they make the following points:

Bill: I always thought Sen. Obama was white! He's every bit as white as Suzanne Malveaux, Bill Richardson, and Harold Ford, isn't he?

Hillary: Barack Obama will be our first woman president!

Bill Clinton's stock has probably been cut in half or more.
That was his incentive for all that campaigning.
50 million was a nice gig.
