But Manny - what good is getting a recommendation from the choir? Jousting with the true believers in Global Warming is almost a national moral duty.

Therein lies the mixed appeal of SI threads, IMO. Some people get satisfaction from jousting. Some people want the warm and cozy feeling of being part of a club, enveloped in ideological kinship. The latter will swarm the former to remove the stain from their presence. The former want to grab the latter by the shoulders and shake them out of their torpor.

My apologies in advance to those who eschew boxes... <g>

We have some people going to jail in my state for registering fraudulent names to vote. The number of votes that they fraudulently registered is about four times the margin between the winner and loser of the best one out of three counts in our gubernatorial election.

Hello? Does anybody see a problem here?

I have some theories about global warming formed from observations I made in the field twenty years ago:

The northern most occurrence of sugar pine, a species common in southern Oregon and northern California, was retreating. That is, the trees were stressed and we had to protect them from being damaged or harvested.

This observation suggests that long term cooling was in progress; otherwise sugar pine would be advancing, not retreating.
