I asked a friend about Eight Belles that knew much more about horses than myself. I wondered whether they could have put her in a sling or harness to try to save her. He said her legs were just broken too close to the hooves although sometimes the attempt is made to keep a stallion alive for breeding. As for her eggs, he said it wasn't uncommon to strip semen, but in vitro was simply too expensive.

These are million dollar animals with 10 cent ankles according to horse person friend of mine. They have bred these massive and powerful bodies that are sitting upon very fine and spindly legs. It's what is fast but it's not durable and this injury is not uncommon unfortunately.

As for PETA and their 1.8 million members and supporters world wide, I wish the press would just ignore them. They are a fringe group with little following that gets far more press attention then they deserve.
