McCain has always wandered in the domain of influence pedalling. He graduated 4th from the bottom of his class in the military academy. This says he was a very poor student and his getting into the academy due to his own merit is suspect.

When he became a Senator, he got entangled in the "Gang of 5" and tried to influence the Govt. for his S&L loan buddy.

If he has operates in this fashion, the lobbyists in DC will have field day under President McCain.

Besides, he does not have the temperament of a President. It is up for debate who would be worse: Bush or McCain?

DismalScientist is correct. McCain comes from a privileged family.

Being a four-star admiral is a really big deal, and today one might make close to $200,000/year after thirty years and no stock options or year-end bonuses. That might be comparable to a bank vice president, like Obama's grandmother when he was at the Punahou school.
