I dunno. I ride it all the time (twice this week, twice next, four times the week after that). At least on my route, the stops are only about 2 minutes, and yet the ride from Albany to Montreal is around 7 hours (maybe 3 1/2 to drive). The train is pretty darned slow, and the route it takes isn't the best.

There is no reason the business can't be run profitably

The competition to rails is road based transportation. The roads are all paid for by the public funds, and the rails have to pay for their roadway themselves. That's why they don't compete well.
