Al, > Why is all this world animosity upon us intensifying over the last 6-7 years? Could be that the arrogance you mention is embodied in our cow boy foreign policies?

It could be, but I'm a big fan of JFK's speech:

"Above all, words alone are not enough. The United States is a peaceful nation. And where our strength and determination are clear, our words need merely to convey conviction, not belligerence. If we are strong, our strength will speak for itself. If we are weak, words will be of no help."

As for "introspection," maybe you'd like to comment on Jimmy Carter's meeting with a known terrorist group whose aim is the destruction of Israel by any means necessary.

What a dumb question.

It is because we opted to defend ourselves from religious fanatics who attacked us, unprovoked, kill 3000 of our innocent civilians. I guess you missed that.

The islamic extremists know they can always count on the Western Left to come to their defense after such an attack.

They know the only force more powerful than airliners flying into skyscrapers is the anti-Americanism of the western left, which can always be counted upon to try to take America down.

It actually isn't.

Why is all this world animosity upon us intensifying over the last 6-7 years?

Some countries that were formerly estranged from the Bush administration (France, Germany, Canada) have elected governments in recent years much warmer to the US. That doesn't fit with intensifying animosity towards us.

We've moved closer to India, a formerly cold nation , and one which is significant given its size and growth, toward us in recent years.

Sub-Saharan Africa is a region which has very warm relations toward the US, because of Bush's AIDS and malaria programs there.

Libya chose to reform its position towards us precisely because the dictator there saw what happened to Saddam and allowed our weapons inspectors to enter their country, dismantle their nuclear weapons program equipment and materials and transport them to Oak Ridge TN for destruction,

We've begun a new international coalition promoting proliferation security - which uncovered the Libyan nuclear program just referred to.

Iraq is showing signs of developing the ability to control its own destiny and will likely be an ally of ours in the region, if only because their military will be trained, equipped and aided by ours.

All of these are signs your basic understanding of our position in the world is fundamentally flawed. Apparently you don't know much about world affairs.
