I think it's "relatively" new that they do it SO much.

I think Lee Atwater might have been the "beginning" of this sort of politics where you don't really try to run on your own merits but spend all your time just trying to make your opponent SO unlikeable that it doesn't really matter whether you have any merits or not.

Stuff like that can work (and has) in the last couple elections because people didn't really have any real "dog in the hunt" since they weren't that worried about their financial security and foreign policy was more "slogan" than reality in their lives.

Things are a little "different" now.
