You don't always have to do the study to understand how the results would be different.

So you know without subtracting out accidental deaths -- which other statisticians have said would be the appropriate way to do the study -- what the answer would be?

How?


And in this case they wouldn't even have to do much of a study, they would just use two existing raw data points for each country, and subtract one from the other.


Sounds like something they should do. Since folks are already making political hay with a faulty study, I harldy see the harm in doing it right.
