I am no fan of religion...the history of christianity is not exactly a peaceful one either...the distinguishing characteristic there in modern history is OIL. The british invaded because of OIL. We rescued Kuwait because of OIL. We prop up the saudi family because of OIL. etc... We even defend Israel to a large extent because it is our outpost in the OIL rich region.

We certainly are interested in the region predominantly because the oil presents a national security risk for us. Were there no oil, we could stand by and let the region wither, which it would do without our $400 Billion/year.

However, it is the religion that causes their aggression. It was the religion, NOT our presence in the ME, that caused 9/11. As pointed out the other day, the religion was the root cause of the Lebanese Civil War and has been the cause of the problems in Lebanon since. The religion is the reason they hate Israel, NOT that Israel was allocated a barren wasteland amongst them. It is, in fact, all about the religion.

You could not be more wrong about our involvement with Israel -- it would be just as strong with or without oil in the region. The Jews have been the subject of religious persecution since the day they received that tiny dot of barren land and began turning it into something. They never had a chance without our support.
