If someone breaks in, yell TIME OUT. Go get your gun then yell TIME IN.

Also, get a lever action shot gun. Makes a nice convincing sound when you chamber the shell. We've been conditioned by the movies to react to that sound.

can I unlock the gun cabinet, load and be ready in time if I ever need it?

No, you can't. If you can't keep it at or under your bed, loaded and ready to go, try something else. Maybe a baseball bat.

<<I purchased some 12ga 00 (double aught) buck shot last month while rethinking my home defense needs.>>

You have what? Grizzly Bears breaking in? Safari guides use #4 buck when going in after wounded leopards.

With a shotgun the more pellets that are hits are more important than penetration going out the back. There is a formula that every hit squares the killing power of the hits.

As a rainy day defense weapon, very little can top a shotgun. Mick recommended a pump-action shotgun with pistol grips. It requires little to no training aside from basic safety, care and target acquisition. He went on to suggest a particular load out of the ammunition with home defense in mind. The 1st round out (last one loaded) should be rock salt, you'd have to learn how to do this yourself or find someone who can, Mick likes rock salt for it's known ability to inflict pain without being likely to kill. This can be inappropriate for a rainy day load as it may not store well for long periods or may not function at a critical moment, I'd personally recommend rubber pellets as they are available as a factory load and have the same desired effect, non-lethal deterrent. It has the secondary bonus effect of waking up your neighbors and warning them to get on the ground and phone the police without being able to penetrate a wall, ceiling or floor. The 2nd round is bird shot, this is a stronger warning that you are willing to use force in an escalating fashion and will brook no further intrusion into your home, it is also likely the intruder will survive to change their mind. This is the last "non-lethal" round in the shotgun as after two warning shots, they are intent on harm and you should be too. The 3rd shot is buckshot, this is a penetrating and potentially devastating round for a shotgun. It is unlikely that an intruder will survive this round. The 4th round is also buckshot as the intruder may not be alone. The final round is a solid slug, on the off chance that an intruder is protected by body armor, which would reduce the effectiveness of buckshot, this will likely end the conflict.
