I know you were joking, but self defense is serious. The real key is: "What would you REALLY be ready to use?" Don't buy a gun unless you are willing to spend some time practicing with it. A club, etc, is a waste of time if you are small and/or not active. Would you really be willing to mix it up in your home with an invader? What if you blew someone away with a shotgun and found out it was a swat team cop? You know they would charge you with murder.

Perhaps a master light switch by your bed would be the best thing. Turn on all the lights in the house and there would be far less chance of error if you came tripping down the stairs with your trusty shotgun. :>)

There was a murder a block away from the building where I worked. The murderer had a gun but the murder was committed with a ball bat.
