But, if you look at Jefferson's writing, post-Constitutional Convention, it is pretty clear that he wasn't a big fan of busting up the Union. "Now, on what constitutional authority did Lincoln quell the rebel Confederates" There was no provision for secession. And that was deliberate, the Articles of Confederation explicitly included that right.
