I know this will cause all kinds of conniptions from you but you do know that it was neven proven that AQ did the bombings in Spain.

> How was Spain, of all countries, putting pressure on AQ?

The most important reason for this attack is that they showed they could influence the outcome of an election -- a fact which nobody can really disagree with. By doing so, they bolstered their strength and showed the world they had not been shut out -- particularly important at the point in time when it occurred.

Secondly, you should keep in mind that Spain was an easy target -- while other countries had stronger anti-terrorist measures in place, it was well known that Spain was an easier target.

It depends on what you mean. A large majority of Spaniards viewed the war in Iraq as destabilizing. The bombings brought that into focus. In addition, they were not happy in the way the government lied about the bombings when they tried to pin them on the Basque separatist movement. Despite it being pretty obvious that they weren't responsible.

And, finally, Spain has greatly stepped up its efforts to control terrorism. So, rather than caving into the terrorists, they have increased their opposition.
