I don't think Romney was turned down because he's a Mormon. He just failed to connect with people. Also, his various repositionings made the base doubt his authenticity. The voters this year were just really receptive to good speakers who could connect with them. Look at Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama. Nobody had any clue about either of them when the race began. They just connected.
