It's all for comedy, of course, but politicians routinely appear on SNL to boost their image.

It is well known that the Clinton campaign actively courted the media and asked them to "balance" their coverage. That SNL skit made political headlines not just because it was good, but because it really did have Hillary's fingerprints all over it.
