The biggest reason for giving extra credence has little to do with actual qualifications of the insider, it has to do with the level of validation it provides to the group being joined; ie you are an expert about that club (even if you're not really) but you left it and joined us, therefore we are better (but we are biased so we don't care as much if your criticism is solid...you get extra credence) The goal of the joinee is to achieve mass acceptance and appreciation in the most efficient manner. The goal of the joined is to be validated. Mutually beneficial results.
