M3 and almost all monetary measures have a time lag before they hit the economic system. Approx. 18 months ago, the ECB's M3 was running around 7-8%.

The ECB's HICP has similar problems to it as the BLS's CPI, except not as severe.

Inflation is not easily detectable by the average person, especially in its earlier stages. Trichet has been warning about it in recent months though.

You may not care for Keynes in general, but I believe this states it fairly well.
"By this means government may secretly and unobserved, confiscate the wealth of the people, and not one man in a million will detect the theft."
-- John Maynard Keynes (the father of 'Keynesian Economics' which our nation now endures) in his book "THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF THE PEACE" (1920). (this is in the context of speaking about the ability to control money supply)
