You overestimate the say average citizens have in the process. For example Minnesotans had exactly 0 say in the matter. Plus there are many levers that the party elite have to use to tilt the choice on one direction or another.

Was the promise made in 2000 or 2004, I don't know.

If anything, media coverage does influence primaries and in that regard I would say it leans toward more liberal candidates.
