JF, there were many people who were wondering whether the Dems were finished after they lost in 2002 and 2004. Rush was obviously one of them, but pundits in mainstream media were also asking the same questions (or reporting on those who were asking them).

To claim now that the GOP is facing extinction is a little premature, don't you think? After all, it's only been two years since the Dems won Congress. The Dems don't even have a nominee yet, much less the White House. And don't forget about the conservative majority in the Supreme Court.
