Bush opposed it.

Well, that's not exactly the whole truth.

Bush opposed the bill, but with excellent reason: There was already a law on the books that called for the death penalty for dragging a man to death, regardless of race. So, there was no need in creating a new racial divide, which totally makes sense.

If you're going to execute the killer for the murder, why in hell do you need ANOTHER law to make it a "hate crime". Hell, by definition, dragging a man to death is a hate crime. If you're going to execute the guy who did it, it is difficult to show that some additional law is needed. In this case two of the three killers were sentenced to death -- the two who were, were so sentenced because of their racism.

Bush made the right (although not the politically correct) decision; you don't need to pile on additional legislation that has no effect other than to clutter up the law, which is what this legislation (eventually passed) did. It is bad law and should never have been passed.

One more reason to hate Bush.

CJ, do you know what the hell he is talking about?"

Yes. There were some ads by the NAACP. James Byrd was dragged to death in Jasper during Bush's tenure as governor. In the wake of it, the state legislature proposed a new hate crime bill.

Bush opposed it.

en.wikipedia.org.

The NAACP publicized it.

A principled position over political expediency... That's a rare thing to see these days...
