As you know, there's a technical, fairly constricted notion of the working class which excludes plumbers as small business entrepeneurs, the petty bourgeois. I do know that. It's just that my experience with plumbers is with grunts, not entrepreneurs, so I wasn't thinking petty bourgeois but rather Joe Butt Crack. Entrepreneurs aren't "working class" in my framework. They're businessmen. More often commentators (and politicians, for that matter) use "working Americans." As if the rest of the country doesn't work. That's the one that seems to me to slip into it's own parody. Yes, that's always amusing.
