Lieutenant commander is consider a leader.

Leading a group of fighters is mostly routine. Many pilots prove to be poor leaders when assigned to a desk job after they can no longer pass their flight medicals. That is why so many of them retire at that level, lots of retired Major's in the Air Force. No telling how high he would have gone if he had not become a POW. He had some issues he had to deal with from the trauma of that.
