The politics of demonization has lost a lot of its appeal, and while it may play to the base, it just repels independents and the old Reagan democrats.

Too bad the news outlets focused more on the quote and not the 60%+ who no longer approve of Iraq and the latest poll showing Dems more trusted on national security issues. Bush is playing the tough guy to an audience who thinks he has already gone off the deep end on these issues.

And McCain is playing along because it looks like such an easy swipe at the naive young rookie.

This is the same tack that Hillary took against Obama, heaping disdain and waiting for everyone to come flocking to her.

I don't see it working now, just like it failed then. McCain and Bush are saying, if you have any sense, you have to see that we have been right about all this stuff all along, and to think otherwise is stupid.

People don't buy the schtick any longer.

One wonders (me) if this isn't an example of a Rove-less Bush.

This is clumsy even for Bush.
