It can be solved case by case on individual basis. That because everyone will try to solve the problem and at the same time defending his special interests. That’s why we have summits. The guys who matter get together and try to reach an agreement. World leaders got paid to get out there and try to work for reaching those consensus. If we talk about energy, food, environment and economic growth, and look to its implications, in the whole scheme of things, it gets really complex if you take into consideration ALL the interests at hand. Once a leader goes about there and speaks his case he has to touch every single issue at hand, so that no one limits himself only to touch the issue that concerns his particular interest. That means everything must be on the table for discussion. And only then after every issue is open at the table, we have a way to discuss them and come out with a consensus. In Brazil we know very well –and accept- that there are contradictions between economic growth, which raises income, which demands more food and energy which in its turn taxes the environment. We come out and say here is some fuel that is environmentally good. People say: We don’t want it. We want to protect our special interest groups. Ok. Fine. As a result of this scheme to protect interest groups corn goes up and raises price of food. We again come out and say: Ok, we can take over the slack and produce more food and expand our agriculture frontier. No. That will hurts the environment. We say. Fine again. Lets open the market for food so that poorer countries get more money for their produce and thus increase their own production. No we don’t open our markets because we have lots of farmers whom we pay not produce and pay to produce local food that costs more. No this is not on the table. Well, we could say let the rest of the world go f**ck themselves and we pursue our single interest. Nope. We would not be Brazilians we would say that. There must be someone who stands up and try to solve that. Who? Autria? Sweden? Holland? Australia, New Zeland Canada? Please lets be serious here :-)
