Once this begins, where does it end? At the point where judges get recalled, I suppose.

California has done this before. Justice Rose Bird was removed in the November 4, 1986 election after a high-profile, highly partisan campaign that cited her categorical opposition to the death penalty.[4] She had voted against the death penalty in all 61 cases that came before her.[5] This led Bird's opponents to claim that she was substituting her own opinions and ideas for the laws and precedents upon which judicial decisions are supposed to be made. The anti-Bird campaign ran television commercials featuring the children of the victims of the murderers whose sentences Bird and her allies Cruz Reynoso and Joseph Grodin had voted to reverse. In addition to Bird, Reynoso and Grodin were also voted off the bench. Justice Stanley Mosk, who regularly joined Bird, Reynoso, and Grodin, was not challenged and remained on the court.

Marriage of gays in California does not have to granted full faith and credit by other states. Nor does Marriage of Gays in California entitled to the normal spousal benefits created under Federal Law for SS and other statutes.

Frankly, one good achieve the same result in California and elsewhere by a Cohabitation agreement spelling out each parties sharing and rights. And with powers of attorney plus health care directives and powers of attorney the difference would be small. Washington state has passed civil union statutes which incorporate much of the same spousal rights as marriage. But such laws do not create rights under Federal Law.

As you said, use of the word marriage has more culteral and religous connotations and that is why Gays want it, not because they need it for economic, cohabitation, estates, bank accounts, health etc.
