"blame them for not taking action to encourage nuclear power, wind power, or solar power."

The things you suggest all generate electricity. They are useless for powering transportation. There are no good alternatives to liquid fuels right now.

"The tragedy of giving up a $40,000 SUV and driving a $8,000 Yaris"

It takes 15 years to turn over the vehicle fleet. Retooling factories to produce economy cars instead of SUVs will take another 5-10 years. In the short run a Yaris simply isn't an option for most people. Detroit will collapse and hundreds of thousands of well paying jobs will be vaporised. And many Americans will find the Yaris to be a deeply unsatisfactory car.

This notion that there is lots of oil to be drilled is commonplace among ignorant people......It only makes it worse by postponing useful action.

There's plenty of support for energy research, alternative fuels and better cars. It's not an either-or proposition.

What I am saying is that it is deeply dishonest for politicians to pretend to care about high gas prices when they are siding with environmentalists and supporting policies that drive gas prices up. Of course it is also dishonest of environmentalists to pretend that ANWR is an "American Serengeti" and that offshore drilling poses a major threat to the oceans. Environmentalists know that the caribou and oilmen have got on just fine at Prudhoe Bay, and they know that offshore drilling in the GOM and the North Sea has had little negative impact, but if they admitted it they'd be out of a job!
