Drilling ANWR would give only a years worth of gas to guzzle in United States. If exported to east asia via pacific, it will be consumed even faster. Further - It would not put a dent on the gas prices.

The guestimate is about 10 billion bbl. That's over a trillion dollars worth of oil at current prices. That would do a lot to help our economy, generate jobs and shrink our trade deficit.

At peak production ANWR would generate 1 million bbl/d of production. That would make a significant difference to the oil market. It would also cut $45 billion off our trade deficit and help to support the dollar.

The environmental impacts would be insignificant. In the 70s, environmentalists claimed that Prudhoe Bay would wipe out the caribou herd. However, the caribou herd has gotten bigger since the oil installations were built. ANWR drilling would be an insignificant pinprick in a vast wilderness.

Drilling off the coast is expected to produce a similar amount of oil and the main environmental impact would be ruining the view of a few wealthy Californians.
