Re: Because it shows that the effect of Intel's rebates tilt the playing field so much that a competitor literally can't even give their product away.

You've already jumped to conclusions. It has to be proven that HP didn't accept AMD processors for free *because* of Intel's rebates. It seems just as likely that market demand wasn't there, and HP didn't want to deal with the costs of a warehouse full of inventory for chips that weren't expected to sell. You know very well that the OEMs judge demand in advance, and they buy only to fill that judged demand.

Or it might point out that a CPU is not a system, and they do not equal the sale of systems and profits generated by the sale of systems. HP would need to have all the other components needed to build a system that are not exactly the same for the systems base on Intel CPUs. Did they have the chipsets, motherboards and other unique components in the pipeline to allow them to digest over 800K additional CPUs? Did they have the channels sales plan ready to go to make this happen? How would a sudden change of plans really affect the bottom line? Just because AMD offered something for "free" doesn’t mean if was going to be good for HPs business. Think about those “free” nights you get offered for looking at a timeshare… are they really free?
