>>the decades old continuing decline of manufacturing in the US ominous<<

It was ominous in 1985 when it was a theme in Forbes. Now it is reality in a global marketplace.

For a view of how one company handled it, look at IBM over those 22 years.

How can a 5 -6 decades long trend be ominous when everyone knows what is happening? I think it is safe to assume that people that have worked in or are working in manufacturing understand.............they have been warned and should be preparing themselves for the inevitable. If they don't, or won't, or can't they will collect unemployment benefits for a certain number of weeks, and then find another job.

The MSM, and labor supporting dems STILL want us to feel sorry? I thought they were so progressive, and on the cutting edge? How long do they expect us to do this? How long is a laid off worker supposed to carry their indignation and anger at the American social system? Forever or until it pays him/her a living wage because govt subsidizes old industry?

All you have to do is look at your chart to see where you should be focusing your efforts. If a person is that incapable then I guess he'll fall behind. Sorry set of circumstances when you have people thinking that way in this country.

But feel sorry, and angry and afraid and indignant............NO...........NOT ME.

I quote a smart man....

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him think.

US manufacturing output has nearly tripled since 1970.

Manufacturing "jobs" have been lost to productivity.

It's destroyed upstate New York. Check out Buffalo. In decline since the 30's. The first city in the nation to have electric lights.

Same with the midwest. People just getting killed. Traditionally Republican, they're joining with the Demos against free trade and specifically blame NAFTA.

Look at Indiana. Lots of car factories at one time; no more. Any talk of retraining the workers is a load of crap.

Both parties are to blame. Both represent their elites and could care less about blue collar workers. The demos are only interested if they're minorities.

Bush has been screwing them with open borders for the last eight years. They call them Regan democrats now. Obama may force them to vote Republican, but the party isn't doing anything positive to get them.

McCain told them the jobs aren't coming back. Not with him and not with Obama. They may get more welfare with Obama, but I don't see anybody retraining them.

Warehousing them till they die is more like it.
