Which may be why he is a columnist and not a valued employee of the State Department. It is the reason Condoleeza Rice, a highly experienced, intelligent individual, is running the State Dept. and TLF is merely a critic.

You negotiate from a position of strength. Always. You do not cave to your adversary's position by negotiating with him about things there can be no agreement on. You walk away, or better yet, don't show up in the first place.

In the current dust-up, Bolten had it right on TV tonight -- "Bush hit the nail on the head, and now the nails are complaining".

No competent negotiator would support the Obama approach.
