When I was doing forest survey in Southern Ohio, I met a man whose house was completely surrounded by coal strip mines. Apparently he was unwilling to budge.

I frequently read Confederate soldiers' diaries.

While they couldn't abide the "Northern Yankees", they rather liked Midwesterners.

I think they had much in common.

Even General Grant, when he would stay overnight in some Southern home, would usually win the homefolks over with his unassuming ways and common touch.

It didn't hurt either that he traveled with a trunk full of ragdolls that he gave to the children.
