Mary, there are mortgages. The borrower and his house are sooner parted than the lender and their money. In the case of the sub prime loans, the lenders have also been Mindless Zombies, though those issuing the loans were not - they got their bonuses and salaries years ago, leaving the actual lenders holding the bag, or mortgagee sale more precisely.

Depending on a drug dealer to look after your health is not wise. They want the revenue, secured over your house if necessary.

Blaming lenders is for Mindless Zombies too. It's even more silly than blaming Uncle Al KBE because at least with Uncle Al the borrowers could say, reasonably, that they don't understand financial relativity theory. Few people do.
