We can discuss which came first, the chicken or the egg. I agree, only the candidates should be fair game, but some politicans' spouses are actively campaigning, and as such, are subject to have their efforts discussed.

But the fact remains, Michelle is out campaigning for her husband. If she's found it a problem, she is the one to walk away.

I don't remember anyone going after Huckabee's wife. They did go after Thompson's "trophy" wife.

No, Michelle jumped into the fray and now has the bruises to show for it and the responsibility to take her licks like everyone else.

I don't know if McCain's wife is publicly speaking for McCain or not. If she is on the stump, publicly speaking for his campaign, then she is fair game also.
