I, for one, can't see any point whatsoever to shaping the part of a mantle that is inside the wall.

I'm sentimentally sympathetic to the half-adz story. I have a quality buffet that I once wanted to use as a room divider. Unfortunately, the don't finish the backs of furniture intended to be placed against the wall, no matter the quality. So there I was with a a half-adz buffet and a need to use it as a room divider. I ended up staining and varnishing the back. It wasn't as classy as a back designed to be exposed but it met my needs at the time. Now it's against a wall, as intended. But I'd love to see a trend to finish the backs of such pieces, just in case.
