re: "AMD's server roadmap burns through Intel's fog",/i>

Yager has an interesting perspective. Reminds me of how Moto with the 68K was going to kick Intel’s butt, or AMDs 486 was going to take the PC market, or MIPs was a can't loose, or Transmeta was the next big thing, or SPARC had Intel by the balls, or PowerPC was head and shoulders above x86.

AMD did in fact have a short term lead on architecture with Opteron. The problem was it was coming from the high-end and therefore could not get the volume at prices that could sustain company profits. In the meantime, Intel has not been sitting still. Intel has the various market covered from almost bottom with the Atom, to the top with Itanium. AMD cannot afford to try and compete from top to bottom. When AMD does try to pick a niche they get squeezed from both sides. In addition, Intel still has added brand value that gets them a few extra dollars at a given performance point and a better cost structure too.

If AMD performs to the latest revised roadmap and Intel stumbles, they have a chance to open another window of opportunity... but the turmoil inside AMD makes that a long shot.
