I don't think you'll see the system dropped entirely but much could be done to shorten and rationalize it. Drop the sacred cows of Iowa and New Hampshire and do the monthly regional primaries I mentioned before (or MM's idea of small states in one, big states in another, etc.). Then get really radical and make all candidates pledge not to campaign more than x months before the first primary. We could take the 2-year ordeal and telescope it back to less than one.
