I get the feeling it was important for him not only to make a point about the reasonableness of his argument but to also to put in his perspective on different things about the campaign and the candidates.

Very plausible motives, Neal. I have no idea what they were but it makes sense.

My only original point about the piece was that it could be written as a simple recounting of the problem, which is, as I've said, very real. By running in the other stuff, he reduces his audience and the credibility of the claim. Lots of folk, coming from my present place in the political spectrum, would simply dismiss it without considering the argument.
