Some basic phones have gotten very cheap.

Yes but did you have to extend your commitment to the plan to get the phone for $50? Maybe you would have remained committed to that plan anyway, but in general the commitment is worth a lot to the cell phone companies. Their business model is basically to subsidize the phones (you can sometimes get them for free, or even have them give you up front cash to take one), in order to get a commitment to monthly payments which can be larger for one month than what they sell the phone for.
