Yes, Slog, I remember those days well. And I was one of those starry-eyed under 30 year old voters who thought that Stevenson was incredible. How he could talk! And how he could think! And he talked and thought in a way that had all of the young intellectuals and university crowds mesmerized and dreaming of a man like him in the White House.

I was devastated when Eisenhower won. I couldn't believe that Americans could be so stupid. It took me years to overcome my grief---and it happened a second time too, in 1956, when Eisenhower defeated Stevenson for a second time.

Well, like all young folks, I finally grew up. And fortunately, my mind grew up too. JFK was the last Democratic candidate for the White House that I voted for. Since then, I have been a reformed Republican.

I am truly amazed that another Stevenson wannabe is on the verge of leading his party down the same path. Yes, Obama has been crowned king of the younger crowd and the intellectual brigades of the nation. And yes, the msms are convinced that this smooth talking son of the Illinois plains (not really--Obama is from the Chicago machine) will bring in a new day and a new age.

The only problem with this scenario is that Obama is not an intellectual. He reads from a script prepared by others. Barack cannot hold a candle to Adlai Stevenson, not as an orator and certainly not as an intellectual. He may make the your girls swoon and Chris Matthews have a tingle in his left leg. But Adlai would really be ashamed of him if he was alive to experience Obama's three-ring political circus.
