Are you suggesting that that set of contrasting characterizations (which would be the focus of the demonization) was in play before hand and they just aggregated and stressed them? Its very possible that was the case, but that wasn't what I was suggesting. I'm suggesting that "that set of contrasting characterizations" is only one part of a wider partisan split, and that many other equal factors or parts of that split started before and after that one idea started to be pushed.
