Yes - we are in a sad sorry state of affairs. McCain does oppose the subsidies. It seems anything to win the farm vote goes in Washington. The only change that is coming is who the pander winners are - but farmers need not worry either way.

It seemed like it made sense, and the idea was supported by a lot of people.

Many supported it because it benefited them or their community, or for political reasons, but your right that many supported it because they thought it was a good idea.

Its one example of the reason to be skeptical about big "good ideas" pushed by government.
