The clash left bruises on both sides. After such an "incredibly sensitive" story, said Richard Stevenson, the Times editor overseeing campaign coverage, "it's fair to say that there were some bad feelings. McCain's aides are fierce advocates for their candidate." But, he added, "whatever feelings the McCain folks might have, we haven't let it affect the way we do our jobs."

Talk about sanitizing a hit piece! The Times ran a huge above the fold story that did nothing but insinuate that since McCain's friendliness with a lobbyist eight years ago had made some of his staff worry about appearances, there must be some affair going on...not that there was a trace of evidence.

Using such a "sensitive" standard, just imagine the stories they could have run about Bill Clinton! but never did, of course.

Kurtz is trying to shield himself from charges of bias by being scrupulously non-judgemental even of egregious cases. But he's free to point up Team McCain's zealousness, of course. That dog won't hunt.

How about a corresponding article on Team Obama's new rules for coverage? I'm not holding my breath.
