The real mistake was the decision to frame the entire war about WMD when that was never the sole reason for it. It did appear to be a "slam dunk", and so they thought that was the best reason.

But it was never the only reason and frankly, wouldn't have been the best reason even if the WMD had been found.

It was a mistake. When you are trying to build a case for doing anything, you don't hold back. You lay everything on the table. Unfortunately, the WMD argument was the one people could most easily understand, so that's what they went with. It was clearly a mistake, and probably was the biggest mistake in the entire war.
