Used to be the case in the UK as diesel was used by the freight industry and petrol was seen as a luxury used by individuals for personal consumption. But then when diesel cars became popular partly as a result the article says they jacked it up. Here in Australia
diesel was recently 30 cents a litre more expensive than petrol (20% more). I haven't heard of diesel cars here though maybe they exist?

it is clear that whether diesel or petrol wins the automotive beauty contest has little to do with science and engineering and a lot more to do with taxation policies and green fashions.

Taxation: Portugal taxes gasoline at 59% and Diesel at 47%. Less tax in Diesel is a disguised subsidy for farmers and truckers.

The story of Diesel in Europe:
Greenism created a scare in the 80s called acid rain. To cut sulphur out of the Diesel they made lean burning engines.
Germany had a lead on that and forced standards that helped their factories that already had the products, forcing Renault and others to follow suit.

Every autumn when the trees dropped the leaves there was the cry: waldsterben (forest dying). Sweden was liming their lakes. Throwing alkaline stuff inside the lakes to counterbalance the acidity.

There was a even a wind war. Sweden saying: we pay for liming the lakes, but the acid is coming with the wind from England.

Anyway, the populace believed greenism and embraced Diesel com gusto. Until today...

And the German and Swedes deciding to shut down their nuclear power plants? Remember that? It is nice to see greenism going to dust bin of history.
