It's kind of like a trap door. If you now want to downsize your vehicle no one wants to give you anything for your SUV and the fuel efficient cars are selling at a premium.
It will work out in time.

I do drive a lot less even though my car gets 29 mpg at 60 mph.

First thing we need to do is stop using oil for fixed base energy use. That includes fuel oil for heating, oil run power plants etc. Go to wind, solar and nuclear. That's the easy part.

Oil used for moving vehicles will be harder and take longer.

A car that gets 50 mpg is not so much of a problem. In Europe, 50% of new cars are super clean diesel -- in France the number is 70%.
