One can make the case that the Bay of Pigs proved kennedy weak to Krushchev and subsequent events leading to CMC all occurred because of bay of pigs. I guess thats the other danger for a new young president. Dont go off half cocked to prove your manhood. But if you do, dont lose or dont do it half assed. Also regarding CMC, US gave up nuked jupiter rockets sitting on russias turkish border. That was a big deal to the russians. LIke Iran today, our opponent feels encircled and creates fear that explains some of their actions in trying to get out of the box. K in cuba is much like iran with pals...The only way they can protect themselves as they see it is if they can credibly threaten causing trouble elsewhere. Same in getting nukes.
