I think that what the author is saying is that the specific dialectic invented by Buchanan and Nixon was the driving force behind the ascendancy of the conservative movement.

If that's his point its one I strongly disagree with. It would be pretty hard to base any major political movement on such a narrow base. The conservative movement isn't and wasn't mostly about bashing amoral, unpatriotic, condescending, elites. (Which doesn't mean that conservatives don't do that, or don't bash people they see that way to a greater extent than liberals do, but "the driving force of the conservative movement"? What nonsense.
