McCain finally throws Hagee under the bus for some nasty cracks about Jews. Now we can sit around and speculate why it took him so long, yada yada yada.

Nice to see these distractions get chucked out the window into the nearest highway trash receptacle.

But I don't believe that one president or Congress can bind all the others in perpetual obligations outside of what is put in the Constitution, and ending them is some great shirking.

Once again, I didn't say anything about perpetual obligations or about not moving on. Of course we can always change direction. But we should feel a twinge of guilt doing it when commitments have been made and people rely on them. Moving on does not absolve us of guilt.

Your approach suggests that we can just toss out SS pensions or abolish veterans' benefits, for example, without a bit of guilt. Of course we can always change direction on anything, as you say, that's not in the constitution. There's no law that says we can't and no force to stop us. And we should do so if it's the smart move. But we are honor bound, if not to offer some transition or compensation, to at least feel bad about reneging and to not protest too loudly when we are judged dishonorable. Even if we were to stop something as unpopular as farm subsidies, some notice at least is needed to assuage guilt.

Maybe I take honor too seriously...
