I saw a slide show at a book promotion that showed Pakistanis growing grain on terrain that we reserve for mountain climbing in this country. No way are those people lazy. In Afghanistan, they grow poppies, which is regrettable. I think it's our fault that there is a market for that, and I don't blame the Afghans.

In places like the Sudan, if you try to help with extra food, one of two things happen: 1) Warlords get it and profit by it, or 2) The population grows even more beyond carrying capacity of the land.

I don't see a civilized or compassionate way to deal with this conundrum. Letting nature take its course might work, but we all know that is not going to happen.
