Same could be said of the voters who voted for Gore and Kerry. Politics isn't a school class exercise where we try to make sure no one feels like they lost.

Someone wins and someone loses in every political race. It's the nature of the game.

The US Constitution originally had the second place finisher in the general election as the vice president. That worked so badly they scrapped it after a few terms.

There are too many other factors impacting a VP choice to dictate that it must go to the first runner-up.
